The Piedmont Oloronais

 

The Community of communes of Piedmont Oloronais covers an area alternating alluvial plains and first foothills of the Pyrenees, the diversity of this landscape area full of valleys and high mountain areas. All the towns of the territory includes a large architectural variety from traditional farmhouse with contemporary architectural designs (Intermunicipal Media center, silver bracket 2011), passing through the villages of houses lined up on the streets, the stately homes of the town the small heritage and built for industry.

Heritage house

At the heart of the medieval district of St. Croix, this house of character is a real small archaeological museum, ethnographic and historical.

Tower Grede

Tower Grède wasn’t always one!

The first building only has a ground floor. Probably dedicated to trade in the late thirteenth century, the building is growing, like the fortune of its owner, the AGREDA family (XV century).

This well-known Monument History inhabitants, is home to an atypical collection of animals in the Pyrenees.

At the top, a lookout offers a panoramic 360 ° view over the city and its surroundings

The St. Mary’s cathedral and its treasure

Oloron Sainte-Marie, rich in treasures, invites you to discover one of the ancient St. Mary's Cathedral, Historic Monument and World Heritage Site under the road to St Jacques. It’s sculpted Romanesque portal fact alone the fame of the building.

Kept at the heart of two chapels, a collection of liturgical vestments and many pieces of jewelry show an episcopal past. A small crib seventeenth century complete the set.

The Crypt Notre Dame

The Notre-Dame, with its bell rises to 52 m, was built in the bottom of the hill the Marcadet on a slope. To remedy this and ensure the stability of the building, the architect realized a crypt.
Perfect for meditation, this unusual place hosts a collection of Sacred Art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The chapel weeks, the old Sunday school, small sacristy and the crypt to the dead greet visitors.

The EDF Space of Oloron

Located next to the hydroelectric factory of Santa Maria, on the Gave d'Aspe, the information space EDF to discover the operation of hydropower, browsing the Aspe valley.
This place also offers extensive information for the curious of nature, water and history of the use of this natural resource. A temporary exhibition space also invites you to to get to know local talent. Equipment available to disabled people.
